How to grow Salad Greens in a Container

planting at home tips

To grow your own garden, you'll need all the tools you'd need to grow your own garden. Many home gardeners already have the necessary tools, such as compost and fertilizer. Be sure to prepare the soil properly before you plant any of your greens. Greens need about four to six hours of sunlight per day to grow well. If you are new to gardening, it is possible to grow them in containers. You might consider planting them in a container, if you don’t live near a large yard.

Many greens have multiple leaves and can be harvested once or twice a day. Even though they are small, you can still harvest them while they're still fresh and tender. You can pick several leaves at once from many lettuce varieties, and you may continue picking them as they mature. Harvesting leaves is a delicate process, so it's best to cut them just above the soil level. Cutting too high can cause damage to the plant and prevent you from future harvests.

For salad greens to grow, the soil must be suitable. Salad greens require high levels of nitrogen, so they need to be planted in fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Shade cloths can easily be hung over hoops, providing protection from cold and frost. Row covers are also available to protect plants against frost and cold. You should fertilize your garden if you plan to plant salad greens.

Most lettuces grow in between 35 to 40 days. While full-sized lettuce varieties such romaine can take up as 70 days, baby and small greens can be harvested in as short as 21 to 27 days. Harvesting lettuce plants from cooler climates can take two months. You can also sow seeds to extend their season. You may need to wait for them to mature before you can harvest them.

You can harvest your harvest in containers over several weeks. While most greens have a short shelf life, the ability to cut and come again increases their productivity. Indoor gardens can also grow perennial spinach. By cultivating a garden in your home, your kids will be able to learn from other gardeners. The best time to plant your seeds is early in the spring or early summer. This is when crops can get the most growth done before it gets too cool. Their growth rate slows as the days get shorter. In some places, however, the day may last longer than 10 hours, so it is a good time to plant a lettuce crop. Mixing different types of seeds can be helpful as they will produce a wide variety of salad greens.

Another good way to ensure a successful harvest is to grow your greens quickly. Growing your greens slowly can result in uneven moisture levels or inadequate nutrients. Slow growth can cause smaller heads which can lead bitter tasting greens. Ideally, greens should grow in soil that remains consistently moist and is rich in organic matter and nitrogen. Your soil's temperature will dictate how much water you should give your plants. A raised bed can be a great option for greens that aren't bitter.

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. You should choose carefully where to place your basil. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
