Planning your garden near water is one of the most important gardening tips. Run a hose straight to the garden site, and water as necessary. The fingertip test can be used to identify when plants need to water. To make sure your garden looks great, once you've chosen the best spot, here are some tips. You can add more gardening tips to your garden once it's established.

Another important garden tip is to make notes about your previous gardens. Note, for instance, the number of vegetables or flowers that you grew last year if your gardening skills are still new. You can also note where you purchased them, how they did, and whether or not they were worth the effort. Keep track of the dates you fertilized and the first frost date in spring and fall. These details will come in handy when planning for your garden.

Start a garden in a small space. A vegetable garden should not exceed 10x10 feet. Instead, opt for raised beds that are three feet wide, and expand next year if you're successful. Good soil is crucial for any garden. This will allow you to grow more delicious and healthier vegetables. Don't forget that large spaces can only make your garden appear cluttered and unproductive.

To plant more vegetables and plants, it is best to sow spinach seeds in August. You don't need to worry about how you grow spinach. Sow them in September. However, flea beetles can still be a problem. If you're planting susceptible crops like lettuce and tomatoes, make sure to cover them with light-weight row covers. Finally, consider the kind of soil you have. The type you have of soil will impact what kind of plants can be grown.

Keep weeds at a minimum when it comes to plants. Weeds compete for water and nutrients, so you should regularly weed the garden to avoid a weedy garden. To prevent mold formation on stems and leaves, it is important to pull out invasive plants. In order to keep your plants healthy and attractive, consider planting a variety of flowers that can be grown in containers.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
