How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
