FAQ

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes grow quickly and bear good fruit all year. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. The soil could dry out if you plant too early. This could lead to root rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

Can I grow fruit trees inside pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will keep the tree from becoming stressed.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
