FAQ

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor plants is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. For example, if you have a 10 foot by 10 foot area (3 meters by three meters), 100 pounds of seeds will be required.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

What seeds should be started indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. The soil could dry out if you plant too early. This could lead to root rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. You can also do soil tests. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
