Herbs Container Gardening - The Best Way to Grow Herbs Outdoors

indoor herb gardening kit

Herbs can be grown in many different ways, but you need to know what your herb's needs are. The container must be large enough for the root system to be contained and at least one-third of the plant's height. This information is on the tag or seed packet attached to each plant. Larger containers are better, and you should choose pots with adequate drainage holes. Herbs that grow rapidly and taller are best grown in larger pots.

You should ensure that your herb garden gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day when choosing a spot. To maximize their growth, they should be placed near a window that receives most sunlight, preferably south-facing. Or, place them in a cool location. You can also grow herbs in grow lights. The best spot for your herb garden is in a sunny window.

Fresh herbs are a great way to make any dish taste better. Harvest them around midday, after the morning dew has dried and the afternoon sun is not too strong. If you don't want your herbs to flower, remove them from the plant. Flowers have a bitter flavor so they shouldn't be added to your dishes. It's also very easy to harvest herbs. You can use them in both salads and cooking. After harvesting, store them in airtight containers and enjoy the delicious aroma and taste of fresh herbs.

When you harvest herbs, cut them at 6-8 feet high. The most efficient way to do this is by pruning the oldest branches first, as these will help the herb regrow faster. Always prune herbs regularly, and make sure to use a pruner to cut off any flower buds at the center. To cut off the top of the herb, you can use scissors. You should not trim more than 25% of an herb when pruning it.

Once your plant is established, you can divide it. You can either purchase fresh seeds or start them from seedlings. The process can be slow, but it is not terribly difficult. To find what works best for your plant, you will need to experiment. This will give you a wonderful new herb to use in your cooking. When you're not in the kitchen, you can enjoy fresh herbs' aromas without ever having to prepare a meal.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
